Hair Myths Debunked

Just because you’ve heard it a million times doesn’t mean it’s true!

We all spend plenty of time washing, conditioning, drying, and treating our hair. Your hair serves as a fashion statement and a natural extension of your personality. In recent years, many hair myths have started popping up, making people question their tried-and-true hair care methods. We’ve all heard by now that some people experience great success with the “no shampoo” approach, but how reliable is that information? Which of these myths can you trust?

We’ve sorted through the rumors and half-truths to debunk common hair care myths to help you remain confident in your hair treatment.

1 | PULLING YOUR GREY HAIR MAKES MORE GROW

No, plucking your greys does not mean that they will come back in multiples. Even though you really want to get rid of them, we suggest you leave them until your next hair appointment. Plucking your hair can possibly destroy the hair follicle which means that it can leave to bald patches… and that’s something that cannot be fixed.

2 | STRESS MAKES YOUR HAIR GREY

The notion that stress makes you gray may be largely myth. Certainly, there are factors other than stress that lead to graying, not the least of which are genetics and age. And plenty of people under significant stress never go gray.

3 | 2 IN 1 SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER PRODUCTS ARE AS GOOD AS USING THEM SEPARATELY

Never! And no, those combo shampoo-conditioners are not for you. These 2 in 1 products will not work as well as having a good separate shampoo and conditioner. These two products work on doing completely different things, shampoo’s job is to clean the dirt and buildup from the scalp whereas the conditioner focuses on smoothing out and locking in nutrients in the hair. In our opinion, buy them separate! A separate, post-shampoo moisturizing, nourishing, hydrating conditioner is an essential part of your healthy hair regimen. We have amazing products in the salon! Like our Keune Care Shampoo and Conditioner!

4 | SHAMPOOING MAKES YOU LOSE HAIR

On average we lose between 50 and 100 strands of hair every single day. You likely see the most hair loss when you’re either brushing or washing it… that’s because when a hair is released from the scalp it’s usually held in place by other hairs – sort of like velcro. This is why it may seem that you’re losing your hair because of these actions but in reality they’ve already been released from the scalp.

5 | THE MORE YOU BRUSH YOUR HAIR, THE HEALTHIER IT WILL BE

You should really only brush your hair when it’s needed, for regular upkeep and knots. Don’t overdue this as this can eventually damage the hair cuticle.

6 | I CAN’T DYE MY HAIR IF I’M PREGNANT

“Being pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t have fabulous hair — just exercise a little caution and common sense.
Yes, you can dye your hair while you’re pregnant — as long as you take certain precautions and mention your pregnancy to your stylist. Dying your hair while your pregnant is safe, as only a tiny amount of the dye is actually absorbed into the skin. Semi-permanent and highlights might be better for you if you’re pregnant, as the ammonia in permanent dyes can trigger nausea for some.”

7 | THE DIRTIER THE HAIR, THE FASTER IT WILL GROW

This is incorrect as hair is at its healthiest and strongest when it’s clean and conditioned! If you skip washing too much your scalp can clog your follicles, which can actually cause your hair to stop growing. So keep your scalp clean.

8 | CUTTING YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY MAKE IT GROW FASTER

The reason why we suggest trimming your hair every six to eight weeks is to prevent your strands from breaking, not because your hair will grow faster. Having full and healthy ends will give the illusion of longer hair though.

9| PONYTAILS, BRAIDS AND BUNS ARE A GOOD DAILY HAIRSTYLE

Absolutely! However, constant tension and traction on hair by styles that are pulled tight — including ponytails, braids, weaves, dreadlocks, cornrows — can cause a receding hairline or breakage that leaves hair thinner, weakened and damaged over time. These are all great hairstyles to skip the heat but you really don’t want this to be a daily thing. Avail our KERATIN HAIR TREATMENT so you can have softer, shinier hair without styling it into ponytails, buns, and braids.

10 | COLOUR TAKES BETTER ON DIRTY HAIR

Again as per last blogpost, colour sticks best to clean hair that doesn’t have any product buildup. So skip the gels, dry shampoo, oils, etc and come to the salon with freshly washed hair. At least 24 hrs before your appointment
