Why Washing Your Hair Less Isn’t Always Better — Especially With Extensions

For years, women have been told the same thing:

“Wash your hair less.”
“Train your scalp.”
“Extensions mean you should stretch out your washes.”

But here’s the thing… that advice doesn’t work for everyone.

And in many cases, it can actually make scalp issues worse.

At Bennetts & Jackson, we see so many women struggling with itchy scalps, irritation, excessive oiliness, buildup, sensitivity, and even certain forms of hair shedding — all while trying to force themselves to go longer between washes because they think they have to.

So let’s clear a few things up.

First: You Cannot “Train” Your Scalp

Your scalp is skin.

Just like the skin on your face, it produces oil based on hormones, genetics, lifestyle, climate, and your individual skin type — not because you’re “washing too often.”

While some people may notice a temporary adjustment period when changing their routine, there’s very little evidence that forcing your scalp to stay oily longer magically teaches it to stop producing oil.

If your scalp feels greasy, irritated, flaky, or uncomfortable after several days without washing… it probably wants to be cleansed.

Simple as that.

Extensions Don’t Change Your Scalp Health

This is a big one.

Having extensions does NOT mean you should avoid washing your hair.

In fact, extension clients often need to be extra mindful of scalp care because sweat, oil, dry shampoo, product buildup, and debris can collect around the wefts or bonds.

When the scalp isn’t being cleansed properly or frequently enough, it can create the perfect environment for irritation and inflammation.

Healthy extensions start with a healthy scalp.

Always.

Washing Less Can Sometimes Make Scalp Issues Worse

Now — this doesn’t mean everyone needs to shampoo daily.

But for some women, stretching washes too far can contribute to:

  • buildup
  • itchiness
  • inflammation
  • sensitivity
  • clogged follicles
  • dandruff flare-ups
  • uncomfortable tension around extensions

And in some cases, scalp inflammation may contribute to increased shedding or hair loss concerns.

That’s why blanket advice like “only wash once a week” simply isn’t realistic for everybody.

So… How Often Should You Wash?

Honestly? It depends on YOU.

Your ideal washing routine should be based on:

  • your scalp condition
  • activity level
  • oil production
  • products used
  • lifestyle
  • and whether your scalp feels healthy and comfortable

For many women, washing more frequently with the right professional products actually improves scalp health dramatically.

The goal isn’t to wash as little as possible.

The goal is a clean, balanced, healthy scalp.

A Few Signs Your Scalp Might Need More Frequent Cleansing

You may need to shampoo more often if you notice:

  • persistent itchiness
  • oily roots very quickly
  • flaky buildup
  • scalp tenderness
  • strong odour at the scalp
  • irritation around extension rows
  • excessive dry shampoo use
  • uncomfortable heaviness at the root area

Your scalp shouldn’t constantly feel irritated just because you’re trying to “make your style last.”

Healthy Hair Starts at the Scalp

Beautiful hair isn’t just about the colour, the extensions, or the styling.

It starts underneath it all.

At Bennetts & Jackson, we always encourage our clients to listen to their scalp instead of following rigid internet rules that may not suit their hair type or lifestyle.

Because sometimes the healthiest thing you can do for your hair…

is simply washing it 🫶🏻
