New Hair Resolutions: 2023

A new year marks another opportunity to be a better version of yourself — and your hair care routine is the perfect place to start. Whether you’ve been reaching for your heat-styling tools a bit too often or opting for high-tension hairstyles that can wreak havoc on your roots, now is the time to make some resolutions for healthier and better-looking hair.

1. Indulge in weekly treatments

We’re always told to take the time during the week to indulge in a weekly hair treatment, but sometimes this is much easier said than done! Take the chance this new year to pick back up on this habit and indulge in some new hair treatments. We suggest using a treatment once a week and letting the treatment sit on your hair for 10 to 15 minutes after shampooing in the shower.

2. Turn Down Your Wash Day Water Temperature

Steaming hot showers can feel like the ultimate delight, but they’re not the best option for your hair. Super-hot water can strip your hair of natural moisture, leaving you with dry strands and faded hair color. Next time you wash your hair, dial down the water to lukewarm — we promise you’ll notice a difference.

3. Try a no heat challenge

2023 is the year we make the resolution to try to limit our hair’s exposure to heat! There are so many heatless ways to curl and smooth your hair’s texture, it’s simply a matter of figuring out what works for you. Embracing natural texture and letting your hair breathe is one of the best steps you can take to achieving healthy hair. It’s all about using heat in moderation!

If you’re someone who doesn’t think that quitting heat entirely is possible, we challenge you to start the year off with a no-heat challenge for 7 days. This will at the very least give your hair a chance to have some downtime, and if the results impress you, it could be the beginning of a new regular practice even past the 7 days.

4. Give High-Tension Hairstyles a Break

High ponytails and sleek ballerina buns may be your go-to look, but these tight hairstyles can put stress on your mane and lead to hair breakage. But that doesn’t mean that you have to leave updos behind. Rather, opt for updos and loose buns to keep your strands stylishly tucked away without any tension and don’t sleep with your hair pulled back in a hair tie.

B&J tip: Another sneaky culprit for hair breakage that many overlook is your hair brush. The pulling and tugging motions create friction which can very easily lead to damage. Reach for a wide tooth comb to detangle your strands — it works for all hair types and it’s much easier to keep clean.

5. Schedule regular salon appointments

As the year winds down and things get busy, it’s understandable if you got behind on your regular salon appointments and trims. Luckily, 2023 is your year of healthy hair and maintenance so first things first—book yourself a salon appointment. This will give your hair a completely fair chance at a fresh start. We suggest getting a trim and deep conditioning treatment during your appointment.

6. Make Hair Care a Part Of Your Self-Care

Whether it’s through a standing appointment with your hairstylist or slathering on a hair mask while you binge watch your favorite reality show, hair care should be part of your self-care routine. Don’t rush through taking care of your strands like it’s a chore to check off of your to-do list. Relax and enjoy it as a moment to pamper yourself just like you would with a pedicure or facial. You’ll have a healthier mind and healthier mane as a result.

7. Learn to style your natural texture

A great challenge and resolution to take upon yourself in 2023 are to try to learn how to work with your natural hair texture. Often we get so used to using blow-dryers, straighteners, and curlers, and sometimes all three in one styling session, that we completely forget how to work with the natural texture we have.
